Peonies are highly fragrant flowers that range from dark red to soft white. When I was doing research on the flower I was surprised to learn all of the history and myths surrounding peonies. In Feng Shui, the flower symbolizes wealth and love (placing these flowers in your home will apparently attract a romantic partner). In some parts of Asia, when the flower is in full bloom, it symbolizes good fortune, success and peace. In Rome, it was believed to protect against evil. And, in ancient Greek mythology, there are multiple versions of a story about Zeus, king of the gods, saving a deity named Paeon, a physician to the gods, by turning him into the flower to avoid being killed by Aesclepius, the god of medicine and healing. Say that three times fast! Regardless of the story, the one fact that remains true is that peonies are stunning luscious flowers with a clean, fresh scent. Try adding some peony inspired products to your vanity to increase your good fortune, keep bad things away, and maybe even attract a special someone into your life.

This week I tested one of Victoria’s Secret’s newest fragrance, Victoria’s Secret Seduction Dark Orchid ($49-$65), which launched in stores and online in October 2012. The wearer of the fragrance is described as a glamorous provocateur, with a fetish for high fashion. Whether you choose to wear it as an everyday spritz, or to induce the senses on a night filled with satin blindfolds and gilded handcuffs, it’s definitely worth a try.
Sultry notes of Midnight Orchid, Crushed Plum and Oud Wood combine to create an enticing fragrance that can easily be worn day or night. It has a very girly, sweet, fresh scent, that isn’t too strong. It’s the kind of subtle aroma that sneaks up on people as they talk to you and wonder where that amazing fragrance is radiating from, as opposed to the kind of perfume that invades the air and lets everyone know you’ve arrived. The scent lingers for most of the day, but a quick touch up is needed if you want it to last way past sundown.
In addition to an eau de parfum, the Secret Seduction Dark Orchid scent is available as a candle, fragrance wash and as a luxurious lotion.
I love the fall because beauty products in the most delectable fragrances start to emerge. I get to enjoy one of my favorite fall side dishes, pumpkin, all year round because of a special scented body wash. Although Halloween has passed and images of pumpkins are starting to be replaced with evergreen trees, there’s no better time than the present to stock up on aromatic sweet or spicy pumpkin beauty products while they are still around for the season.

On a hot summer day, the mind can’t help but to drift off to fantasies of cool blue waters splashing against warm skin, and tranquil breezes lightly rustling through trees. Just because you can’t be engulfed by ocean waves, doesn’t mean you can’t splash yourself with fragrances to ignite your aqua dreams, and trick your nasal senses with the illusion that you are just a few steps away from the beach.

This summer escape to your favorite beach destination with the Sea Class Collection by Finn & Company. Finn & Co is a luxury skin care line produced by a mother/daughter team based in Maine. The duo creates products for women who would rather care for their skin naturally, and avoid the risk of procedures to look youthful. The company’s aromatic Sea Class collection contains two fabulous fragrances: Black Sand and White Sand.
I absolutely adore the White Sand collection. The lightweight Body Cream ($48) melts onto skin and instantly hydrates it. It has a refreshing aromatic citrus undertone, and when used together with the fragrance spray ($36), the sweetly perfumed scent lasts all day long. I receive tons of compliments from strangers whenever I use the White Sand products.
Sugary-sweet isn’t your preference? Then try the products in the Black Sand collection. Black Sand has a soft musky scent, that’s very soothing. The Black Sand Body Cream ($48) feels a little bit richer than the White Sand, for those of you who prefer a little extra hydration.
The body creams for both fragrances are infused with exotic coco butter and apricot oil, so they walk a fine line between being body oil and lotion. This isn’t a bad thing. The oil base of the creams allows them to dissolve into skin for a surge of moisture; and, there are no worries of streaks and no need for vigorous rubbing to get the products absorbed. Best of all, they are great for all skin types. To learn more about Finn & Co click here»
So far on this site, I covered beauty products inspired by lilacs and dahlias. Today, I bring you: freesias. Before this post, I don’t think I ever knew anything about freesias, strongly scented garden plants native to Africa. Apparently, theses dainty flowers are beloved worldwide, and because of their strong sweet/spicy scent, they are often used in a variety of beauty products, as well as candles and air fresheners. A freesia symbolizes fidelity, innocence and sweetness, and is the ultimate symbolism of eternal love, so step aside roses. It’s traditional to give freesias on the 7th wedding anniversary, the year when I guess, doubts arise, to reinforce faithfulness and trust. When I think of trust, I keep replaying the scenes in Aladdin, when the question “Do you trust me?” repeats so frequently that you just want to run into Aladdin’s scrawny, tan arms and scream “Yes!,” but I digress.
I’m not sure if a flower will ever get me to trust someone, but maybe the symbolism will inspire me to trust myself more often. Try wearing freesia scented products when you are in doubt or nervous, so you can begin to trust yourself. Because after all, if you don’t trust yourself who will?

I love spring. The temperature is always just right; I awaken every morning to the harmonious sounds of birds chirping outside my window, and the most beautiful flowers begin to bloom. A while ago, I did a feature on the lilac, and with spring flowers blossoming and swaying gently in the wind as if they are waving goodbye to winter, I have decided to do a series of beauty products inspired by flowers every month until the end of summer. Today, I wanted to focus on one of my favorite flowers, the dahlia. Known as Mexico’s national flower, these colorful flowers look like they are bursting with joy with rings upon rings of petals. Most dahlias don’t have a scent, but their beauty makes up for it. These flowers traditionally symbolize elegance and dignity, so put on your dahlia inspired beauty products when you are truly feeling regal.

Known for its rich, purple hue and sweet floral scent, the story of the lilac has its roots in Greek mythology. According to the story, a beautiful nymph named Syringa attracted the affection of a forest god named Pan, who chased her through the forest. In order to escape him, she transformed herself into a lovely, aromatic purple flower.
Incorporate some lilac scented beauty products into your beauty regimen. You never know, it may result in you attracting the affection of someone you desire.

Last week, the FDA announced that they will begin requiring companies to identify any products made with bug extract on their ingredients list, due to serve allergic reactions caused by beetle-based coloring additives. The beetle juice will be listed as cochineal extract or carmine, and is the main element responsible for making red lipstick the bright cherry shade women adore wearing. But, that’s not the only odd ingredient lurking within beauty products.
Diatomaceous earth, a component in dynamite, is sure to make you explode with beauty. It is used in deodorant, natural toothpastes, cuticle cream, and can even be found as a gentle exfoliater in beauty products.
Plastic, which we mainly use for packaging purposes, can be found in hair gel and hair spray, as it adds a protective barrier. Plastic is also responsible for making your waterproof mascara, waterproof.
Simethicone, the main ingredient in gas relief medicine, is used in some hair products to tame flyaway hairs.
Crave shiny, luxurious hair? Some hair salons have begun using bull semen, which is said to add high shine and softness to dull hair.
Now that you know about some of these weird additions in your beauty products, will you start reading labels on your products more closely?
Natalie Portman’s was chosen as the new face for THE Parfums Christian Dior line. In her first advertisement for the line’s flirty perfume, Miss Dior Chérie, Portman, 29, appears topless wearing a simple black headband. Her makeup is simple, as she looks out at viewers in a flirtatious stare.
Unlike Portman, singer Rihanna is not just the face of a new perfume ad, but she is following the trend of other pop starlets such as Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Mariah Carey, by launching her very own signature fragrance called Reb’l Fleur, which is said to invoke sweet fruity and floral scents of her native country, Barbados. The fragrance will be available in department stores in February with prices ranging from $49-$59 for the fragrance and $30 for the lotion.
Are you more likely to buy fragrances when celebrities simply appear in the ad campaigns, or is it important that they create their own signature scent?
Let’s face it, when the sun goes down we women don’t work twice as hard on perfecting our beauty regimen the way we do when we know the sunlight will be shining on our faces during the day, ready to revel the line of foundation that wasn’t blended properly. Just because the gleam from the moon isn’t as intense, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t look our best…even at midnight.
From Britney Spears’ delicate and sweet Midnight Fantasy perfume to Dior’s Once in a blue moon collection, these midnight-inspired beauty products makes sure you stay gorgeous under the shade of night. And, best of all, you can wear all of them at any time of day.
Last Thursday Coty Inc., confirmed a deal with international superstar Lady Gaga to develop her first-ever signature fragrance to be launched in spring 2012. Lady Gaga is known for being a fashion trendsetter, so it’s no surprise that she would venture into the fragrance business.
“Lady Gaga is explosive, provocative and sexy,” says Bernd Beetz, Chief Executive Officer, Coty Inc, three traits that will no doubt be expressed in her new perfume. The packaging of the bottle is sure to reflect her fashion-forward aesthetics. The fragrance line is yet to be named, but Lady Gaga will take on the role of Creative Director along with her Haus of Gaga team.
Coty’s portfolio of celebrity partnerships include L.A.M.B. fragrance by Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Lopez, and Sarah Jessica Parker.
On November 12th, singer Katy Perry launched her new cat-inspired fragrance called ‘Purr’ at Selfridges in London, England. Hundreds of fans lined up outside the store to catch a glimpse of the pop star, who wore a purple Miu Miu Fall 2010 dress. The fragrance is available exclusively at Nordstrom stores ($65.00 for a 3.4 oz) and will make its Statewide launch in New York City on November 16th.
You never know when you might need that extra little burst of scent, and usually the perfume you spray on in the AM will start to wear off by mid afternoon. But, carrying around liquid perfumes can be daunting and downright scary; one wrong move, and the entire thing can combust. Then, you also have to worry about finding the right place to give yourself a little spritz, and you will be the most hated person in a room full of people if you pull out a full bottle and start spraying away.
Portable perfumes are convenient for the busy girl on the go, because it allows you to slyly give yourself a fragrance touch-up, and also makes perfect stocking stuffer for the holidays. Here are some light, travel friendly fragrances that not only smell great, but won’t weigh your purse down:
