I love wearing nail polish, but the one thing that I don’t look forward to is taking the color off. Very few removers actually smell good, so I was excited to learn that UK-based nail brand Ciaté has unveiled a newly formulated collection of Chocolate Scented Nail Polish Removers. Decant sugary scents include white, dark, mint and orange chocolate, making the nail polish removal process a yummy treat for your hands and senses. The ammonia-free removers aim to gently remove colors while Vitamins E and B5 work to condition and nourish nails. The removers currently retail for $16 each online.
The first Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer ’14 ad campaign debuted earlier this month featuring singer/actress/twerk professional Miley Cyrus. The ad features a sulky-looking Miley on a dark beach with two friends. Adding to the darkness of the photos are the star’s nails, which were painted with Marc Jacobs Beauty’s Enamored Hi-Shine Lacquer in BARK! The nail lacquer is a rich shade of chocolate-brown designed with a special formula that aims to replicate the finish and shine of 30 coats of polish.
Want Miley’s nails? BARK! will be available for a limited time for Summer 2014 at Sephora, Sephora.com, Marcjacobsbeauty.com and select Marc Jacobs Boutiques. The product will retail for $18.

Gel polish has become a must-have beauty item. With long-wearing staying power, a variety of colors, and the ability to do it yourself at home, it’s hard to resist the allure of this perfect manicure. This week, I am reviewing the Nailene Gel Kit with the French manicure.
NOTE: Please follow the instructions in the kit properly. Too much primer and gel base will cause the gel not to form properly on your nail and hold.
Step 1 – Clean and buff your nail; a self-manicure essentially. I do this with my mini-manicure kit that I purchased at Sephora for $5.00.
Step 2 – Use the gel primer. Do not over use as a little bit goes along way. To avoid putting too much on, dab the brush against the inside of the bottle.
Step 3 – Time to start cooking! Place your hands in the provided LED lamp for 2 minutes. Do thumbs last.
Step 4 – Next, the gel base coat. Again, place a thin layer on your nail and place your hands under the LED lamp for another 2 minutes.
At this point, you should be able to see your nail start to shine. Feel free to touch the nail. It should be glossy and smooth.
Step 5 – As in Step 4, brush on the gel polish of choice. For me, it was the French Pink. Place hands under LED lamp.
Step 6 – Apply second coat and replace hands under lamp for 2 minutes.
By now, this might be redundant to place your hands in and out of the LED lamp so many times, but this is order for the gel to set and give you that shiny gel perfection.
Step 7 – Last time! Please the gel top coat and get back under the LED lamp for your final 2 minutes of baking.
Step 8 – Using some rubbing alcohol or the one provided, take a cotton ball or a napkin and gently rub your nail. This removes any excess coating and creates that shine. This also ensures that the gel has set properly. If you find the gel still wet, go back under the LED lamp for two more minutes.
Now, I have given instructions for the normal color. I am going to add the extra steps for the French.
The French kit comes with separate tips that must be applied after the gel has set. If you are doing French, DO NOT follow Step 6. Go right into applying the white tips. The tips are rather sticky; you must be very careful when using them….they stick to anything! They stuck to the table that I was working on and they are very hard to remove. So, be sure you have paper towels or a newspaper under our hands when working. It was very difficult to select the right size tip for my nail which caused me to have to trim and take extra time to get the French just right. After you have selected your tips and they are on (hopefully you didn’t create a sticky mess like me!) you can apply the top coat.
Overall, this is a great product when using a solid color. I would re-think the French kit. The tips should not be so sticky or add a small bottle of white polish so that the user can pick their own size and have less stickiness to worry about.
Last week I took a yoga class at the gym and when the lights dimmed, I couldn’t help but notice the nails of the girl next to me glowed in the dimly lit room, and I was obsessed. So, this week I happily tested out Ciaté’s Corrupted Neons Manicure Set, which not only gives you glow-in-the-dark nails, but an oh-so-pretty sparkling manicure for the daytime. Here are the steps to get glowing nails using the kit:
Step 1: Remove the bottles from the kit and admire the cute little bow on the polish.
For this review, I used Foam Party which includes:
- 0.45 oz Paint Pots Nail Polish in Boom Box
- 0.45 oz Caviar Pearls in Foam Party
- Mini Black Light Topcoat
Step 2: Apply a clear base coat to nails and allow it to dry completely.
Step 3: Apply two heavy coats of the base color.
Step 4: While nails are still wet, sprinkle the caviar pearls over nails generously, as pictured below.
I received tons of compliments on neon glitter texture of my nails, and this week, when I returned to the gym, I was the one with glowing nails.
The Ciaté Corrupted Neons Manicure Set is available in 4 shades for $25 at Sephora.com.

If you want real nail polish strips that you can use to show off your own personal style, Incoco is the brand for you. These strips are made from real nail polish and come in a variety of designs. For this review we used “Bombshell” – a swirl of gold, rose gold, and black with a glitter finish. Here is how to apply the product to end up with a fabulous manicure:
1- File your nails to desired length and push cuticles back (this is a very important step!)
2- Find your size.
3- Peel plastic from front of strip.
4- Peel plastic from the back.
NOTE: Be careful as these are real nail polish strips, are very thin and can rip easily. Take your time.
5- Gently, place the strip on nail starting at the cuticle and smooth forward. Stretch strip over nail if necessary.
6- Once strip has completely covered the nail, pinch excess off or if you choose, you can use the file provided in the package. However, I found that I did not need the file, as the excess broke off leaving an even line behind after I pinched it together.
That’s it! You should now have gorgeous looking nails that will last for up to 8 days (the package says 10), but mine started to chip at day 5, which is fine – that only means you can take off the old faster to get to the next design!
Also, unlike nail stickers, these actually come off easily with nail polish remover just like real nail polish, so there is no need to soak first and then peel.
Overall, this is a great product that you need to try. Affordable, beautiful and hassle free! Buy it for $8.99 here»
A few weeks ago I told you about the launch of Illamasqua’s new Paranormal collection, which features a variety of products with bold hues and unexpected textures. Amongst the new collection are four high-impact limited edition nail varnishes, which look great alone, but under UV light, emit a bright glow for stand-out nails. This week I tested out the UV Glow Nail Varnish in SÉANCE (Paranormal bright violet).
What I like: The color glides on smoothly, making the application virtually mistake proof. Within a matter of minutes my nails were dry so the fact that I was able to paint my nails with a gorgeous color, and run out the house in under an hour is a huge plus. The high shine finish gives you a salon-quality manicure, and the subtle hint of shimmer is playful, without being overdramatic. Séance is also the perfect shade of purple, which is perfect for daytime, but still dramatic enough to complement any nighttime look.
How much is it: $17.00
Where to buy: Sephora or Illamasqua.com
On Tuesday, April 23rd, I attended a preview of Illamasqua’s new exciting collection, Paranormal, which features unexpected textures and formulas. US Nail Ambassador and Nail Artist Fleury Rose and Brand Ambassador and Makeup Artist Josh Heald, were on hand to introduce the innovative products set to launch at Sephora and Sephora.com on April 30th.
Never before have I experienced a makeup collection that ignites the physical senses, and provides the opportunity for play and experimentation. Below is a sampling of some of the otherworldly products that will be available.
New Paranormal UV Nail Varnish Ltd Edition $17.00
3 new nail varnishes (Paranormal Bright Green Ouija; Paranormal Bright Pink and Paranormal Bright Violet Geist) offer a vivid burst of color. When combined with Illamasqua’s new top coat, Paranormal Clear/Glow, the polishes glow under UV Black Light, serving as undercover nail art, invisible to the naked eye until the sun goes down and your nails begin to illuminate.
New Paranormal Palette $46.50
The unique eye shadow palette features four shades: Paranormal: Vivid Cerise Aura and Warm Coppe; Possession: Cool green Trance and Soft Violet. The texture of the shadows is unusual and surprising – it feels soft and rubbery, similar to play dough. The formula is water-resistant and can be applied to create a soft barely-there look, or layered for a bold pop of color.
New Gleam in Supernatural $26.00
This iridescent highlighter is available in one universal shade, Supernatural – Warm Bronze, and is faltering on all skin tones. Lighter skins can use it to fake a golden glow, and darker skin beauties can use it to highlight different areas of the face including under the eye brows and the cupid’s bow.

Jamberry nail wraps are a fun way to spice up your style with innovative and creative designs. With St. Patrick’s Day coming up, we decided to test out one of the green and white designs as an ode to the holiday.
Here’s how to add some spunk to your nails:
1. Clear nails of all polish with nail polish remover; buff and smooth with a nail file. The Jamberry instructions suggest that you again clean your nails with nail polish remover, but you can skip this part. As long as your nails are dry and oil free, you should be fine.
2. Find your nail size. Instead of going in the order the nail wraps are on the sheet, size your nails up individually under the plastic to find the closest fit. Not all packages come with the same sizes. Some packages come with round and square nail beds.
3. Once your size is selected, heat with a blow dryer for 10-15 seconds. It should become warm and flexible.
4. Place sticker on nail and firmly smooth over entire nail.
5. Cut sticker to your nail length and file to your nail shape.
6. Heat again with blow dryer and press firmly to seal.
7. Done! Now you are ready for the parade!
Although we thought our nails came out looking amazing and received tons of compliments, there is a slight learning curve that comes with using the nail wraps. Here are some helpful notes:
1-Make sure you really smooth the sticker at the tip of the nail. Failure to do this will lift the sticker off the nail.
2-It is tiring to do the first hand, but after the first 5 fingers, it becomes easy to do, so don’t give up!
3-By day two, the top nail film started coming off the sticker. Therefore, it’s our opinion that these nails are more suited for one-time events such as weddings, dates or fun events like the one featured for this posting: St. Patricks’ Day!
Note: we received the nail wrap used for this article in a gift bag at the Duane Street Bloggers Lounge in February 2013
