Product Review: PRX Reparatives Intensive Fortifying Masque

fekki

Because I have thick, curly hair, I’m always on the lookout for a hair mask that will condition my unruly frizz and leave it not only feeling healthy, but looking healthy. For the last three weeks I have been using Frederic Fekkai’s PRX Reparatives Intensive Fortifying Masque, and absolutely love it. The mask is infused with Argan extract, and aims to restore hair’s smoothness and shine when used once a week. It also helps protect hair from future damage.

The product has a yummy vanilla scent, that isn’t overwhelming and softly lingers in your hair, leaving behind a nice, sweet scent throughout the day. The consistency itself is rich and creamy and coats the hair very nicely.

I usually leave it on for 10-15 minutes and when I feel I need more intense conditioning, I put a plastic cap around my hair and sit under a hair bonnet. The result since I’ve been using it is super silky, plump, bouncy curls. My dry hair always feels re-hydrated after I use it and is frizz-free.

The mask retails for $25 online. Visit fekkai.com to learn more.

Anti-Aging Tips from Kate Somerville

meet_kate

Kate Somerville sees and treats a variety of skin in her Skin Health Experts Clinic, based in Los Angeles, but the main concern her clients have is finding ways to look younger. Below are some of Kate’s favorite tips and products for revealing a more youthful looking complexion.

Cleansing – Many of my clients rush through the cleansing step. At my Skin Health Experts Clinic, we actually perform a dual-cleansing method. First, skin is cleansed with a milky cleanser to remove dirt, oils and makeup, and then we follow with a cleanser that is best suited for the client’s skin. At home, I also love using a clean washcloth to steam and soften skin. Always remember to cleanse correctly, especially at night! Your skin needs to be cleansed properly in order to repair and for your products to work effectively.

KateCeuticals Moisture Milk Cleanser
Gentle Daily Wash

Exfoliation – After cleansing, every treatment at my Clinic starts with ExfoliKate! Why? The dry, dead layer that sits on the skin’s surface not only dulls the complexion, it also prevents products from absorbing effectively and can make the texture of skin look uneven. Exfoliation will help skin look brighter, smoother and more even. It also sets the stage for flawless makeup application. I recommend exfoliating twice a week. Look for products with Fruit Enzymes and round, smooth beads. That way, you experience the benefits from both physical and chemical exfoliation.

Hydration – Hydrated skin is healthy skin. When skin is hydrated, it bounces back! When skin is dehydrated, fine lines and wrinkles are more prominent. Expression lines, like the elevens in between your eyebrows can also be exaggerated. Serums containing Hyaluronic Acid will add much-needed hydration into your regimen – plumping skin and restoring that youthful bounce. My personal favorite is DermalQuench Liquid Lift Advanced Wrinkle Treatment, and I never leave home without it! This unique, oil-free, foaming booster delivers an infusion of hydration and oxygen for both immediate and long-term results.

Eye Creams – Your eyes reveal lack of sleep, too much sodium and a host of other poor habits. Rejuvenate your eye area by using an eye cream to nourish the eye area and help with puffiness, dryness and fine lines and wrinkles. I recommend using a product with illuminating properties so the light softly highlights the under eye area and the upper cheekbone.

Age Arrest Eye Cream

SPF – Not all sunscreens are created equal, but year-round SPF is a necessary part of any skincare regimen, especially if you are battling discoloration. I was never a believer in combining an anti-aging moisturizer with an SPF because the anti-aging actives need to be delivered deeper into the skin to be effective while Sunscreen works best on the skin’s surface. I was able to create lightweight sunscreen formulas with a revolutionary reservoir system which keeps key ingredients separated so they stay where they work best!
Products:
Daily Deflector Waterlight Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ PA+++ Anti-Aging Sunscreen
Daily Deflector Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ PA+++

Retinols – Retinol is one of the most powerful ingredients in an anti-aging regimen. I’ve seen clients who’ve used Retinol products for years and their skin looks healthy, youthful and glowing! The key is cell turnover and the stimulation of collagen. You may also use Retinol products all over your chest, neck and on the back of your hands. Be sure to apply sunscreen wherever you are applying your retinol products.
Product:
RetAsphere 2-in-1 Retinol Night Cream

Pollution Protection – Pollution can increase damage to the skin. Contaminants and carcinogens can cause issues ranging from sensitivity to premature aging. Incorporate Antioxidants to help combat environmental pollution. Other aspects of your regimen such as proper cleansing and SPF also factor in to protecting skin against harmful environmental aggressors.

Product Review: Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Eye Pencil

If you’ve viewed my Instagram page lately (@delia_licious) you saw a quick snapshot I did using colors from Estée Lauder’s new Double Wear Stay-In-Place Eye Pencil collection.

estee

Available in 16 gorgeous shades, the 12-hour wear eye pencils are not just long-lasting, but waterproof, so you can define your eyes and not have to work about the product disappearing or smudging. I wear the colors from day-to-night and found that they are in fact long-wearing and do not fade at all. I have the teal, gold and sapphire blue, and the colors are bright and vibrant; moreover, they really do apply true to the way they look on the outside of the pencil.

When I applied the product, it glided on smoothly and effortlessly. I also liked that the pencil features a smudger on the other end for to facilitate creating a smokey eye look. I actually used the smudger to create the winged eyeliner look seen in the picture above.

The eye pencils retail for about $23.

Warming Ginger Body Scrub

We love a good body scrub and this warming body scrub is perfect for those chilly nights.
This recipe makes just enough to use on those rough bits on your legs and arms.

In one bowl mix together the following:

1 cup light brown sugar
3⁄4 cup coconut oil
1 tbsp cinnamon
1 tbsp ground ginger
Gently buff into damp skin in the areas that are dry or rough.

Pre-pedicure Foot Soak

This DIY may sound a little weird but boy does it work! If your feet are in need of some much needed TLC, just give this Listerine foot-soak a try before painting your toes. They’ll look and feel brand new!

In a large bowl mix the following and let your feet soak for 10 minutes:

1⁄2 cup Listerine
1⁄2 cup white vinegar
5 cups warm water

Honey Yogurt Hair Mask

If your hair is looking a bit drab and could use a boost of shine, this is the hair treatment for you.

Whisk together the following and let sit in your hair for 30 minutes:

1 very ripe banana
1/4 cup honey
1/2 cup plain yogurt

To prevent dripping and add some heat, carefully wrap your hair (only your hair!) with saran wrap after applying.

When does your makeup really expire?

I was recently cleaning my room for the New Year and unearthed a ton of products tucked away that I had completely forgot I had. As tempting as it was for me to hang on to them (I am very attached to beauty products and have a hard time at the thought of having to let any of them go to waste), I realized that I need to put the health of my skin first. So, I had to check the expiration dates on the packages. The problem? Most of the products didn’t have the expiration date listed, so what I decided to do next is look up the expiration date online. Yup. Many of you may not be aware, but one of the best ways to find out the shelf life of a product is to simply look it up online. All you have to do is locate the batch code or a lot number that’s usually printed on the packaging or product.

Celebrity Hair Stylist, Julius Michael, shares his tips, techniques, and a step-by-step tutorial on how to recreate the stunning retro glam look see above.

• Begin with damp hair, using the Olivia Garden Divine Wet Detangler to smooth out hair and detangle knots

• Section off the center portion of hair directly above the forehead, securing the rest of the hair behind the head using an Olivia Garden Double Clip

image003

• Blow dry the hair using the Olivia Garden Heat Pro thermal round brush to minimize dry time and protect the hair from heat damage. Style the hair in a curl using upward strokes

• Once hair is dry, set the curl by securing the hair in a roll using another Double Clip

• Move on to the hair on the sides and back of the head, blow drying individual sections of hair outwards and downwards towards the chin

image005

• Once dry, clip each section into a roll to set the curls

• To create volume at the crown, divide the back of the hair into two sections. For the top section, blow dry hair upwards first, then use a downward rolling motion to finish drying before pinning it up into a roll

image009

• Repeat with the bottom section at the back of the head

• To finish the look, apply some extra heat from the blow dryer and spray the set curls with an anti-humidity spray

• Allow the curls to cool for five minutes, and then remove the Double Clips

• Gently brush out the curls using the Olivia Garden Divine 100% Boar brush to add shine

Disheveled French Twist

Jenny Balding, Cutler/Redken Stylist, shares her favorite style to take you from work to play. It looks a little complicated, but don’t worry, it only takes 10 minutes to achieve this look.

• Start with day old hair as you’ll have some texture in your hair and it will be easier to manage.

• Use dry shampoo to really boost the texture of your roots (Redken Pillow Proof dry shampoo is excellent). Spray throughout your roots and even the mid-lengths to create body and texture.
• Shake through with your fingers.

• Use a light hairspray for a little hold – Redken Fashion Work 12 Versatile Hairspray works best as it is a versatile spray. Mist over all and shake up with your hands to really create body and movement.

• Section out the crown and front area and pin to one side.

• Sweep the sides and back together and then twist upwards and pin. Make sure to use hairpins (U shaped pins) so they can really anchor the hair.

• Take your top section and roll under and pin at the crown for a little height in this area.
Loosen the hairline a little with your fingers to work suits your face shape best then add a hair accessory of your choice.

• To finish, add a little shine by misting Redken Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist all over – this is very light but gives just the right amount shine you need.

At the December 7th premiere of the movie “Annie,” actress Cameron Diaz who plays Miss. Hannigan in the film opted for a much understated look with an all-black ensemble. Her makeup, however, was anything but understated. “To compliment the classic simplicity of her dress, we created a beauty look that was clean and modern with a pop of color,” said Robin Fredriksz for MARC JACOBS BEAUTY. “The result is pretty and fresh, which is always my inspiration for Cameron and the perfect description of her beauty.”

Below Robin discuss the techniques used to create Cameron’s red-carpet look:

Lips:
“Cameron loves to play with color but to keep it focused to one area of the face. We immediately fell in love with this deep, berry shade of the Marc Jacobs Beauty Kiss Pop Lip Color Stick in Headliner 608, which we used to layer and blend onto the lips. We even dabbed the color on the apples of her cheeks to tie the entire face together for a cohesive, punctuated, flushed look.”

Skin:
“Given the brightness of the lips, we kept the skin very light and luminous with the Marc Jacobs Beauty Genius Gel Supercharged Foundation and highlighted her features with slight contouring using the Marc Jacobs Beauty O!Mega Bronze Perfect Tan and The Bronze – Bronzer Brush No.12.”

Eyes:

“To highlight Cameron’s striking eyes, we used the Marc Jacobs Beauty Style-Eye Con No.7 Plush Shadow in The Dreamer 212, primarily using the matte pink eyeshadow all over the eye lid and then taking the pink shimmer eyeshadow for under the inner eye to give a little sparkle. We applied a light dusting of the dark brown shadow in the crease of the eye to add depth and dimension. We used Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in Brown(Out) 54 to outline the top and bottom eye lids blending the pencil line with a brush to create a softened effect, which served as the perfect complement for the blueness in her eyes. We finished the look with Marc Jacobs Beauty O!Mega Lash Volumizing Mascara in Blacquer 30 to add a glossy, high-impact for a true movie-star effect.”

PRODUCTS:
Marc Jacobs Beauty Genius Gel Super-Charged Foundation ($48), Marc Jacobs Beauty O!Mega Bronze Perfect Tan ($49), Marc Jacobs Beauty The Bronze – Bronzer Brush No.12 ($78), Marc Jacobs Beauty Style-Eye Con No.7 Plush Shadow in The Dreamer 212 ($59), Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in Brown(Out) 54 ($25), Marc Jacobs Beauty O!Mega Lash Volumizing Mascara in Blacquer 30 ($26), Marc Jacobs Beauty Kiss Pop Lip Color Stick in Headliner 608 ($28)

Pantone’s 2015 Color of the Year Nails Inspiration

Pantone recently announced Marsala as the 2015 Color of the Year, but you don’t have to wait until next year to begin incorporating the earthy red-brown hue into your beauty routine. Try adding the color to your nails with CND’s VINYLUX Weekly Polish collection, which includes a variety of Marsala-esque shades.

VINYLUX Weekly Polish is a two-part system consisting of a Color Coat that adheres directly to the nail, eliminating the need for a base coat. The second step, a Top Coat, is formulated with patent-pending ProLight Technology that increases in durability with exposure to natural light. Because the system works with natural light, there is no need for harmful UV/LED lights in order to get a full week of chip-free polish. As an extra bonus, the full system dries in 8 ½ minutes.

See below for some of the Marsala-esque colors available now, as well as some design inspirations.

Product Review: Maybelline New York Eyestudio Brow Drama Sculpting Brow Mascara

I recently tested out Maybelline New York Eyestudio Brow Drama Sculpting Brow Mascara. The product promises to give you bold and sculpted arches with just a few strokes of a brush. It features a Sculpting Ball Brush, similar to a mascara wand, and uses a tinted colored gel to fill in sparse areas.

The brush picks up just enough of the gel formula and combs it through the small brow hairs evenly and lightly. For a very natural look I went over my brows with one coat as you see in the picture below. When I decided I wanted a fuller darker brow, a la Cara Delevingne, I added a few more swipes, which gave me very thick, but still natural looking arches. The best thing about the gel is that once it dries, it really stays put, so you don’t have to worry about it smudging or wearing off throughout the day.

IMG_5513

The only con is that it does take some time to get used to the application, which requires light, upwards strokes along the contour of the brow. I would recommend this product for someone who has a difficult time mastering pencil and powder liners and wants a quick and easy way to create a groomed look. For those who are brow pros, use this to sculpt, define and lock hairs in place, then go over sparse areas with your pencil or brush.

The product is available in 3 shades: blonde, soft brown and deep brown. It retails for about $9 in drugstores.
