4 Things to Consider for Your Skin’s Summer to Fall Transition

When the weather starts getting cooler in the winter, the first things that enter our head is our new wardrobe. We think of replacing our shorts and camis with long sleeved tops and sweaters and instead of sandals we take out our boots. The most important thing that we need to worry about however is the largest organ in our body… the skin. Skin gets affected by the change in temperature and the change in the level of humidity. Fall brings about chillier and drier air. We also need to consider repairing all the damage that we have caused our skin during warmer months. The beach parties and sun exposure causes terrible harm to our skin. Let’s see what changes we should bring about in order to preserve our skin.

1. Body

After exposure to the sun your body is likely to suffer from sunburn. No matter how good your sunblock may be, it cannot block the effect skinof the sun completely. Some people’s skin also gets so dry that it flakes off. This is the time your body requires in order to heal.

Before going to bed make sure you rub lotion all over your body. Include it as a part of your sleeping ritual. Massaging lotion in your body actually helps relax you. It also helps the circulation of blood throughout your body. This generally reduces your fatigue.

After you come out of the shower you should also apply a small quantity over your wet skin. This is the perfect timing to do so as your pores are usually open after taking a long shower with warm water. This helps lock moisture in your skin.

2. Face

faceYour face is the mirror to your soul! Gotta keep it looking fresh ladies!

Your face needs moisture. Don’t use cleansers that have alcohol or any other drying agent. Instead of gel based face washes go for a creamy one. It will help lock moisture in your skin.

Use a night cream when you go to bed. Always wash your face before putting on a cream before bedtime. Get a serum if you have dark circles under eyes as well.

Exfoliate! Summer leaves your pores all clogged up with dirt as you go to sandy beaches. Try to exfoliate at least twice a week. As fall is drier dead skin cells also tend to accumulate on the skin so try and scrub it off frequently. Never scrub too hard as it can damage your skin instead of reviving it.

You also need to stop using your toner as your skin does not require you to dry it up more. However a primer is a must then as you do not want to end up with a shiny nose and forehead at the end of the day.

Now fall demands a softer look so get rid of your bronzers and apply lighter foundations. Also make sure that you use a liquid foundation. Maybeline dream liquid mousse works best for me during winters.

3. Lips

Don’t forget your lips. They get chapped in winters and lipstick never looks good on chapped lips. Don’t forget to wear a chap stick during the day. Whenever you exfoliate your face also exfoliate your lips. No his does not mean you should put scrub on your lips. However there are amazing DIY lip scrubs. Simply put Vaseline on a toothbrush and lightly brush your lips with it. You should always use Vaseline before going to bed.

4. Hair

hairWhile worrying about your skin, don’t forget your hair. Fall can bring about dandruff. Dandruff not only leads to an itchy scalp and hair fall but some extreme cases of dandruff also starts coming on your forehead and makes your skin look bad. The simple solution to this is oiling. Oil your hair at least two times a week, if possible. Olive oil is best for a scalp massage. You can just put hair oil 15 minutes before you shower and then wash it off with shampoo. You can also leave the hair overnight if it does not bother you. Do not shampoo your hair twice or thrice to get the oil out otherwise the whole purpose of applying it will be countered.

You need to understand that different skins require different level of care. Although oily skin maybe a handful in the summers, drier skins cannot bear the effect of a dry winter. If your skin is too dry you should refer to a dermatologist for special creams for winter months.

Your skin is the first thing that can give away your age. It is very important to take good care of your skin even in younger years so that it does not start deteriorating as you get older.

Nubian Skin: Lingerie Line For Women of Color

Nude undergarments are a must-have for women who want a polished look when wearing sheer or white clothing. But, for many women whose skin tones are darker than the average version of “nude” available on the market, which is usually a shade of beige, finding the perfect seamless undergarment can be difficult. A new hosiery and lingerie line, NubianSkin, is aiming to change that with the introduction of a line of essential undergarment needs, available in suitable skin-tones for women of color.

Nubian Skin founder, Ade Hassan, developed the line after being frustrated by the lack of undergarments that met the needs of ethic women. With the new line, women can choose from four different dark skin tone shades including Café au Lait, Caramel, Cinnamon and Berry. The company has a skin-tone matching guide on their website to help customers select the hue that best suits them.

Nubian Skin, which is based in London, recently launched at Nordstrom stores in the US and ships worldwide. Learn more.

It’s important to protect your skin from potential sun damage all year-long, and one of the best ways to do that is by wearing sunscreen. Anti-Aging Tips from Kate Somerville

Kate Somerville sees and treats a variety of skin in her Skin Health Experts Clinic, based in Los Angeles, but the main concern her clients have is finding ways to look younger. Below are some of Kate’s favorite tips and products for revealing a more youthful looking complexion.

Cleansing – Many of my clients rush through the cleansing step. At my Skin Health Experts Clinic, we actually perform a dual-cleansing method. First, skin is cleansed with a milky cleanser to remove dirt, oils and makeup, and then we follow with a cleanser that is best suited for the client’s skin. At home, I also love using a clean washcloth to steam and soften skin. Always remember to cleanse correctly, especially at night! Your skin needs to be cleansed properly in order to repair and for your products to work effectively.

Exfoliation – After cleansing, every treatment at my Clinic starts with ExfoliKate! Why? The dry, dead layer that sits on the skin’s surface not only dulls the complexion, it also prevents products from absorbing effectively and can make the texture of skin look uneven. Exfoliation will help skin look brighter, smoother and more even. It also sets the stage for flawless makeup application. I recommend exfoliating twice a week. Look for products with Fruit Enzymes and round, smooth beads. That way, you experience the benefits from both physical and chemical exfoliation.

Hydration – Hydrated skin is healthy skin. When skin is hydrated, it bounces back! When skin is dehydrated, fine lines and wrinkles are more prominent. Expression lines, like the elevens in between your eyebrows can also be exaggerated. Serums containing Hyaluronic Acid will add much-needed hydration into your regimen – plumping skin and restoring that youthful bounce. My personal favorite is DermalQuench Liquid Lift Advanced Wrinkle Treatment, and I never leave home without it! This unique, oil-free, foaming booster delivers an infusion of hydration and oxygen for both immediate and long-term results.

Eye Creams – Your eyes reveal lack of sleep, too much sodium and a host of other poor habits. Rejuvenate your eye area by using an eye cream to nourish the eye area and help with puffiness, dryness and fine lines and wrinkles. I recommend using a product with illuminating properties so the light softly highlights the under eye area and the upper cheekbone.
Age Arrest Eye Cream

SPF – Not all sunscreens are created equal, but year-round SPF is a necessary part of any skincare regimen, especially if you are battling discoloration. I was never a believer in combining an anti-aging moisturizer with an SPF because the anti-aging actives need to be delivered deeper into the skin to be effective while Sunscreen works best on the skin’s surface. I was able to create lightweight sunscreen formulas with a revolutionary reservoir system which keeps key ingredients separated so they stay where they work best!

Retinols – Retinol is one of the most powerful ingredients in an anti-aging regimen. I’ve seen clients who’ve used Retinol products for years and their skin looks healthy, youthful and glowing! The key is cell turnover and the stimulation of collagen. You may also use Retinol products all over your chest, neck and on the back of your hands. Be sure to apply sunscreen wherever you are applying your retinol products.
RetAsphere 2-in-1 Retinol Night Cream

Pollution Protection – Pollution can increase damage to the skin. Contaminants and carcinogens can cause issues ranging from sensitivity to premature aging. Incorporate Antioxidants to help combat environmental pollution. Other aspects of your regimen such as proper cleansing and SPF also factor in to protecting skin against harmful environmental aggressors.

Product Review: Weleda Pomegranate Regenerating Body Lotion

weledaWHAT IS IT: A regenerating body lotion for mature skin that aims to prevent premature skin aging. Organic pomegranate seed oil and apricot kernel oil work harmoniously with shea butter to stimulate skin’s cell renewal process, while also protecting it from damaging environmental influences.

HOW IT FEELS: The creamy lotion has a light texture that blends seamlessly and absorbs quickly into the skin. While you apply it, the product releases a refreshing citrus-y aroma that awakens the senses. Just note, the scent doesn’t last on the skin too long, which is fine if you don’t want it to clash with your daily perfume.

BOTTOM LINE: Although it says it’s meant for mature skin, I really liked the way this lotion made my not-so-mature skin feel. My skin felt extremely hydrated and remained velvety-smooth all day long. If you’re looking for an all-natural moisturizer to give you silky smooth, youthful skin, give this a try.

New Product Will Hydrate Your Skin This Winter

Clients|Kiehl'sI went for a short walk outside this weekend and realized something awful: winter is coming. My body was yearning for the comfort of a hat and soft scarf as I made my way down the street with the cold air hitting me in various directions causing me to speed-walk into the comfort of a department store. Yes, cold weather, I blame you for turning my noble intentions of an afternoon walk into an unnecessary shopping spree.

With the winter temperature fast approaching it’s important to adjust your skin care routine to incorporate products that help keep the skin moisturized and hydrated. One new product that launched this fall promises to do just that – enter Kiehl’s Hydro-Plumping Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate, a new product inspired by new Dermatology hydration procedures such as Juvederm® Hydrate. The serum was developed to address “Age-Related Dehydration,” a skin condition that contributes to the appearance of aging and is caused by an imbalance and lack of water within the skin. When the skin has this imbalance, the creepy signs of aging appear sooner.

“As we age, the concentration of moisture-binding molecules within the skin progressively diminishes, allowing essential moisture to escape and making the skin prone to showing signs of age-related dehydration, said Dr. Adam Geyer, Kiehl’s Consulting Dermatologist.

73% of women in the US cited dull, tired looking skin as a serious skincare concern. This breakthrough formula has clinically demonstrated to help correct the signs of Age-Related Dehydration by “flooding” the deepest surface layers of dehydrated skin to restore vital moisture. Plant-based glycerin and Shiso Leaf comprises 85 % of the emulsion; the result is that the skin gets some serious hydration, and appears more fresh, plump, and youthful. Below are some of the stats from the company’s clinical trials.

Immediately after using Kiehl’s Hydro-Plumping Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate:
• 87% of women said their skin felt more refreshed
• 86% of women said their skin felt more comfortable
• 81% of women said their skin felt more smooth

1 week after using Kiehl’s Hydro-Plumping Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate:
• 87% of women said their skin felt more deeply hydrated and moisturized
• 86% of women said their skin appeared more revitalized and rejuvenated
• 86% of women said the texture of their skin felt softer

The product is available in-store and online for $58.
