Pulled back hair dominated on the runways of Paris Fashion Week. Whether they were sleek and sulty or messy and edgy, this hairstyle prevailed. Here are some tips on how you can get the looks styled by Redken Creative Consultant Guido.
LANVIN FALL – WINTER 2014
The hair at Lavin’s F/W 2014 collection was amped up with wet and greasy textures to give the hair a nighttime feel to go along with the evening atmosphere created on the runway. A messy updo glistened on the runway for a very sexy and edgy illusion. Here’s how to get the look.

MARGIELA FALL – WINTER 2014
The hair at Margiela’s F/W 2014 was kept traditional to match the style of the clothing this season. The bun was given volume with a droopy side knoot to give an overall mature feeling to the hairstyle. Guido combined flex shape factor 22 and flex mess around 10 to give the hair some texture and hold. Once the hair was prepped with product, Guido divided the hair into two sections and twisted inwards before creating a loose knot.

9. Finish with forceful 23 super strength finishing spray
CELINE FALL – WINTER 2014
Easy and minimal was the theme for the hair at the Celine F/W runway. “So we are backstage at Celine and the hair is well, very Celine-esque, which means that it is simple and minimal” said Guido I used flex mess around 10, which is a new cream-paste from Redken, on the roots to give the hair a bit of hold and texture. I wanted the product to hold the lines created as I raked my fingers through the hair. This technique made the style feel masculine in a way.”

Redken Creative Consultant Guido created a playful twist on the traditional ponytail look for Valentino’s Fall/Winter 2014 Paris Fashion Week show. The out-of-the-box look lent itself well to the eccentric designs presented in the collection season, and added lightness to the collection as a whole.
“The collection this season felt more eclectic, so I wanted the hair at Valentino to be more whimsical and playful,” said Guido. “I created a simple part and added a little bit of height at the crown to give the hair a late 60s kind of feel. Regardless of these youthful subtitles, the vibe remained true to the brand’s identity. The hair is beautiful and very Valentino.”

The hair at the 2014 Fall/Winter New York Fashion Week presentation by Marc By Marc Jacobs, brought us all back to our school girl days, with two tight clean braids accessorized with black headbands. The hair was made a little playful with slightly disheveled strands, as a way to make it clear that even though the hairstyle was playful, a Marc girl isn’t a typical girl next door. The hairstyle “incorporated elements of manga, cartoon warriors and Wednesday Addams from the Addams Family into the look I designed for Marc by Marc Jacobs.,” said Redken Creative Consultant Guido. “I created this schoolgirl hairstyle with the Marc girl in mind, in that I wanted the overall style to remain youthful, cool and a bit punk. There is substance and style to the Marc girl, but there is also a rebellious dark side. Quite simply, the two braids are not meant to be that cute or innocent.”

Thanks to the blockbuster hit The Great Gatsby and the TV series Boardwalk Empire, the roaring 20s has become a major trend for Halloween in 2013. For those of you donning a chic flapper dress, here’s how to get the perfect makeup look and hair.
How to Get the Look
- Spritz a two-inch section of hair with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Boost & Lift Hairspray. Using a one-inch barrel curling iron, curl the section away from your face.
- Gently slide curl off the iron so it holds the shape of the barrel, and pin. Repeat over entire head. Let curls set for at least 30 minutes.
- While curls set, prep skin with moisturizer, and then apply COVERGIRL Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 Foundation with a foundation brush for even coverage. Set with pressed powder.
- Dust cheekbones with bronzer for definition, then apply rosy-pink blush to the apples of cheeks.
- Use bronzer and pressed powder to create a neutral smoky eye. Sweep pressed powder over the entire lid and blend bronzer in the crease.
- Apply COVERGIRL Ink It! By Perfect Point Plus in Black eyeliner to upper and lower lashlines, extending the line slightly beyond the outer corners of eyes. Coat top and bottom lashes generously with mascara.
- Finish with a red lipstick like COVERGIRL LipPerfection Lip Color in Hot and layer with COVERGIRL Lipslicks Smoochies Lip Balm in Tweet Me for a glossy look.
- Release curls and brush to create subtle waves. Smooth flyaways with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Extreme SMOOTH Combing Crème.
In case you missed it, the hair at the Louis Vuitton show at the S/S 2014 Paris Fashion Week was a spectacular production. Styled by Redken Creative Consultant Guido, messy hair strands poked out of the dramatic headpieces.
“It’s a very stylized look, which is fitting for Marc Jacobs. I wanted the hair to be in a messy knot to offset the richness of the headdress.” Said Guido. “The hair is youthful and playful, whereas the feathered headpieces are quite heavy and exotically ornamental.”
Get the look (if you dare) by following the below steps:
1. Blow dry damp hair with full frame 07 protective volumizing mousse and a round brush
2. Pull hair into a ponytail and secure with a hair tie
3. Twist into messy knot leaving ends loose
4. Finish with quick dry 18 instant finishing spray
5. Put headdress on

This fall, Pureology will be launching its new Fresh Approach, Dry Shampoo and Conditioner for color-treated hair. One of the leading causes for color fading is water abrasion, which can occur in a pool or even in your own shower. Pureology’s new line aims to combat this problem and extend the life of your hair color with a no-rinse cleansing collection that includes a dry shampoo and conditioner. When used twice a week in place of water cleansing for 10 weeks, the combo was shown to reduce color-stripping water abrasion by 40%, and extend hair color power by up to 4 weeks.
The unique, mineral-infused formula features the company’s proprietary AntiFade Complex® to refresh color-treated hair while Orange Oil adds a radiant, low-mattifying finish.
Both the shampoo and condition treatment will be available October 2013 in salons nationwide for $24 each. Please visit Pureology.com to learn more and find a salon near you.

On September 6th, BASIC Hair operated a Pop Up Hair salon as a part of Fro Fashion Week. This first time extravaganza focused solely on the beauty and style of all natural hair. Curly, kinky, wavy – every curl type was welcome! I decided to try the BASIC all natural hair service. BASIC, prides itself on its BASIC boost treatment that not only smoothes your hair when wanting to wear it straight, but also can define your curl.
My hair was treated with a “Boost”, which consists of Boost Sulfate Free Shampoo and Boost Rapid Conditioner. If you have a lot of products build up in your hair, use a clarifying shampoo beforehand and followed by the Boost Shampoo and Conditioner. My hair was the softest it has even been after this wash. The leave-in conditioner was applied and my hair then sectioned. The hair stylist, Dawn, then proceeded to add the curl defining gel to each section (not a lot, literally a dime piece), and then double strand braid my hair and then I was sent to it under the drier.
At this point I had two options, unravel the braids or continue to let the hair air dry.
I chose the latter. I returned the next day to have loosen the braids and the result; soft, bouncy and defined curls! I couldn’t believe it when I saw myself in the mirror.
The main idea behind this line is keeping your hair natural whether you choose to wear it straight or curly. The Boost treatment will help your hair get healthy, retain and add vital protein to your hair and give your tresses a lustrous look after every wash and style. But, not only does this product aim to make your hair fabulous, the Herbaceous Oil works in your hair to add shine and penetrate to add nutrients to your hair; it can also be used as a body oil. I tried a dab on my hands and it did not sit on my skin like most body oils so, after a few seconds of massaging into my hand, it disappeared leaving my hand silky and smooth. The key to this lightweight miracle is the essential oils used that do not sit; these oils are the oils that penetrate the skin in order to do its job!
I had a great experience and the staff were friendly and full of Southern Hospitality! I will definitely be adding the Boost treatment to my hair care regiment! For further information, check out the BASIC Hair Care website to locate a BASIC style expert near you.

Mexican designer Paola Hernández presented her Spring 2014 Collection titled “Singularity,” at Chelsea art space Churner and Churner Gallery during New York Fashion Week. The collection portrays the notion of Singularity with pleats that represent the unfolding of the spark in each of our hearts.
To complement the fashions, the hair of the models were made sleek but also featured an unexpected twist of a tight, center braid, creating a strong, yet feminine look.
“Paolas’ collection this season has strong shapes but have a beautiful fluid movement so I wanted the hair to reflect that with the strength of the braid and soft flow of shin, silky, straight hair,” said Jenny Balding, Cutler Salon Stylist & Redken Grooming & Styling Expert. “This look can be worn really at any time but it’s a fantastic alternative to wearing your hair down for an evening look.”
Here’s how you can get the look, and watch the video below to see exactly what Jenny did to achieve the bold hair style.
•Blow dry very straight with Redken align 12 protective straightening lotion
•Section a mohawk section of 2″ width coming into a point at the nape.
•Apply Redken align 12 protective straightening lotion again to this section as it will help hold the braid. Reverse braid from the hairline right down to the nape and secure with small band.
•Finish with Cutler Flyaway Stick on stray hairs to keep the look polished.
Move over long-haired beauties, there’s a fierce new trend in town and its cropped, very short hair. Miley Cyrus tuned heads when she chopped her girl-next-door locks over-emphasizing the fact that she’s all grown up. Then, Beyoncé sent shock waves across Instagram when she debuted a pixie cut, turning her “If I Were A Boy” trademark song into a literal interpretation. Now, Alicia Keys has joined the club. The singer recently appeared on Good Morning America sporting a super short hair-do. So, what’s up with this craze infiltrating the celeb world? It’s been a hot summer, but not steaming. Has super short hair become attention-seeking statement piece, or at we at the beginning of hair liberation?
Not sure how to wear your hair for your next hot date, or casual outing with friends? Then look no further than the new how-to tutorials by Redken, featuring everything from updos to pin straight hair. It is that time of the year again when us ladies (and some gents) are getting ready to hit the beach in our ultra-sexy swimwear. But, before you strut your stuff on the beach you need to make sure all unwanted hair is under control, so on a quest for a smooth shave, we tested out Bikini Soft Smooth Shave Oil.
What is it? The product is a combination of natural oils, rich moisturizers and softeners that lubricates the skin and softens the hair shaft, enabling a close, smooth shave.
What does it do? It replaces all traditional forms of shave lubricants such as creams, soaps, gels…etc, and claims to dramatically reduce skin irritation, razor burn, nicks, cuts, scratches and ingrown hairs in sensitive areas such as bikini lines and underarms. The transparent oil allows you to see exactly what you are shaving, while also nourishing the skin.
The promise: Bikini Soft has a 30 day, 100% money back guarantee. If you’re not happy for any reason, you can return it for a full refund, no questions asked.
The result (product tested by Jolevette): “Using the recommended dose of 8-10 drops, I massaged the oil onto the area I wanted to shave, and put a little on my razor blade for a closer shave. The mix of essential oils, such as jojoba, aided in soothing the sensitive areas I shaved, and left my skin feeling silky smooth. Overall, I was very pleased with the product, and I am not shy about stepping out on the beach in my swimsuit this summer!”

On Thursday, January 31st, I had the opportunity to attend an event to learn more about Reviving Red, a new hair care line developed by Pureology for red and copper color-treated hair. People with red hair often contend with fading and color bleeding; this hair care line makes it possible for red and copper treated hair to last up to 30 washes. The system includes a unique blend of oils to nourish, illuminate, and protect the hair from free radical aggressors. Reviving Red also delivers lycopene, a powerful antioxidant found in tomatoes and other red fruits, to help prevent color bleeding. The line includes a shampoo, conditioner, Caring Oil, and most notably, a color-depositing conditioning treatment. To learn more about the Reviving Red hair care line, please click here.
Up until I was in the eighth grade, my mom took the main responsibility for the disaster that is my hair. It took a lot of pulling and smothering palm fulls of Indian Hemp hair products, for her to be able to tame my wild, frizzy coils that always seemed to channel their inner Diana Ross. Then, when I would get my hair straightened, my long hair swallowed me up like Cousin It. As a result, I have always stuck to a basic can’t-go-wrong ponytail.
My New Year’s resolution for 2013 is to learn how to create a super glamorous hairstyle. I always have the perfect outfit and fabulous makeup look, but I am always completely clueless about how to wear my hair. In order to get ideas, I checked out the TRESemmé Style Studio, a new interactive and customizable step-by-step hair tutorial and tip site of over 100 different hair styles. On the site, you can select your hair type (straight, curly, wavy, with bangs) and hair length (short, medium, long), and occasion (Girls Night, At the Office, Blushing Bride, and Date Night).
The thing I love the most about this website is that it gives you the ability to upload a photo of yourself and get a complete hair makeover using their Instant Styler. I spent a full hour this weekend trying on different hairstyles and colors. It’s so much fun! Check out one of my results below:
What is your 2013 hair resolution?
However perfectly you have styled your hair first thing in the morning, stepping out into pouring rain, hot and humid conditions, wind or snow can all play havoc with your look. It’s important to make sure you are wearing the right hairstyle to hold up to the day’s forecast if you want to avoid a hair disaster!
Our favourite celebrities are a dab-hand at keeping their look polished and red-carpet perfect whatever the season, but with a team of hairdressers and stylists to hand it’s no surprise. Here are our top tips to try at home, inspired by some of the most stylish celebs:
Mary Kate Olsen’s pretty plaits
Heidi-style braids, as worn by Mary Kate Olsen, Kirsten Dunst and Jessica Alba, are the ultimate bad-weather style. Easily done once you have mastered the technique, the style looks best when a little messy and lived-in looking, and is a great way to keep your hair looking good between washes.
Get it by parting your hair and putting in two pig tails. Braid each side and secure with elastic bands (choose metal-free ones to avoid damaging your hair), then take the left plait, wrap across the top of your head, and pin behind the right ear. Repeat with the other side.
Eva Longoria’s Half-Up Look
When the weather’s warm and your hair is naturally more curly, putting half of it up is a good way to achieve a soft and romantic look.
This is simply done by parting your hair down the middle and clipping it up on either side. You could add volume with a little back combing for an evening look. If your hair is too smooth to hold the grips, spraying them with hairspray before putting them in your hair will hold the style more effectively.
Charlize Theron’s low side bun
This is the perfect hairstyle to neaten up your look quickly after being caught out in rain or wind; you will be looking effortlessly elegant in minutes. Simply part hair your on one side, braid it to the end, then wrap into a bun shape to one side and pin, holding with hairspray if you have any to hand. This works best for medium to long styles.
Jessica Biel’s Ponytail with a difference
A ponytail is the surest way to keep your hair from getting ruined by the weather. A slicked-back style will work best for hot days; try smoothing back your hair with a medium hold gel and pull into a tight ponytail at crown height. Create texture in the ends of your hair for some nice contrast, by spritzing salt spray onto the hair and scrunching, for a tousled effect.
For a more glamorous evening look, you can try adding some volume at the front of your head, which is softer and more flattering for your face. Start on day-old hair for better grip, and back-comb gently at the roots. Spray with a strong hairspray, and create a low ponytail. Take a strand from underneath the ponytail, wrap it round the hair band, and pin in place to finish.

On Tuesday, October 9th, I had the opportunity to visit Redken’s New York City Headquarters to learn more about Curvaceous, a new hair care and styling line specially formulated for loose waves to curly hair. The products employ cutting edge technology such as sugar crystals and moringa oil to restore curly’s hear vitality and reduce frizz by up to 97% for up to three days.
Curvaceous consists of seven different products: Cream Shampoo, Conditioner, Curl Diva nourishing mask, Wind Up reactivating spray, Ringlet perfecting lotion, Full Swirl cream serum, and Wave Ahead texturizing mousse.
As a curly haired girl, I’m excited about the launch of this line. The main product that caught my attention is the conditioner, which can be rinsed out after shampooing, or left in to be blended with other products for extra definition.
The in Full Swirl 2-in-1 cream serum is also a must-have. The swirl formula mixes a serum with a lightweight cream to control frizz and lock-in moisture.
Not sure which products in the line would be right for you? There’s an app for that. Using Redken’s Style Station app, customers and stylists are able to receive a customized regimen after making a number of selections about hair ringlets, including hair type and curl pattern. By simply touching the screen on an iPad or iPhone, hair literally moves and bounces off the screen as you make your selections, creating the ultimate interactive experience. The system is able to create up to 180 regimens, customized for every type of curl and wave, using Curvaceous’ unique mix of products.
Sofia Vergara is undeniably one of the most powerful women in Hollywood right now. Maybe it’s her magnetic dark, brown locks or her adorable Latin accent, but the world can’t seem to get enough of Sofia. I will admit I have never seen one movie or television show she has ever been in, but yet, I still know who this woman is. This month Vergara heats up the cover of Lucky magazine, available on newsstands on October 9th.
Her looks are enviable, and so is her self-confidence, “I was never insecure of my looks,” she tells Lucky, “but I never think, ‘Oh I’m so spectacular.’ Maybe that helps.”
There’s something to be said about a female who is absolutely gorgeous, but doesn’t think she is the most beautiful woman in the world. Perhaps being around a galaxy of Hollywood starlets can do that to you, or just learning to be comfortable in your own skin. Pick up the latest issue of Lucky, and click here to read the full article to learn more about Vergara’s thoughts on her um, assets, her inspiration for her Kmart clothing line, and the secret to her success.
After that, if you start wishing you could wake up one morning and look like her, have no fear. Below I’ve included step-by-step instructions (courtesy of Pureology) on how you can recreate Vergara’s red carpet look at the 2012 Emmy’s.
1. On damp hair layer a dime size of Pureology Colour Stylist Control Twist high hold liquid wax (emulsified in palms first) with two golf ball-sized pumps of Pureology Colour Stylist Silk Bodifier voluminizing mousse, working through your hair from roots to ends.
2. Blow dry your hair with a large round brush to give volume and bend.
3. Apply a dime size of Pureology Colour Stylist Control Twist high hold liquid wax to dry hair for shine and memory (be sure to emulsify in palms before applying).4. Using a 1-inch curling iron, curl random pieces of hair away from the face.
5. Finish with Pureology Colour Stylist Supreme Control zero dulling hairspray for long-lasting hold.
Now, all you need to do is perfect your Spanish accent (step-by-step instructions not provided).
Today, I’m going to divulge her secret for soft, shiny hair. We all know the benefits of eating eggs. They are rich in protein, vitamins and biton, and usually people eat them. Well, not my mom. Since I was a kid I’ve seen her crack open an egg and add it to her hair instead of to the frying pan. The same essential vitamins and nutrients found in eggs that are good for your body, are also good for your hair. Eggs strengthen hair follicles, and some serious shine. Here are the steps:
1. Before shampooing hair, beat an egg in a bowl and set aside.
2. Shampoo hair normally.
3. In place of conditioner, massage the egg mix onto the hair and scalp and leave on for 15 minutes
4. Rinse the egg out with COOL water (Caution: make sure you do not use hot water to rinse the egg out, or it will scramble in your hair).
5. Optional: Shampoo hair again to rinse the smell out of your hair
6. Style as usual.
Fashion shows are known for their display of the most fabulous, new trends in clothing; but, in addition to forecasting our stylish wardrobe, the runway also influences the upcoming season’s hottest hair trends. Below are two of my favorite looks from New York Fashion week, and how you can recreate the looks from the runway.

2. Blow dry just the top section of hair to just behind the ear, then spray water on the back to re-dampen & let dry naturally.
3. Spray the hairline with forceful 23 hairspray to smooth & hold.
4. Apply shine flash 02 glistening mist on the top of head.
5. Use lots of powder refresh 01 dry shampoo on the bottom third of hair to get a light fluffy effect.
What: The glossy bun
Where: Ralph Lauren Spring 2013 show

Lately, I’ve been contemplating adding highlights to my hair. I have never had my hair dyed before, and decided that if this is something, I really want to do, then it should only be done by a professional. But, once I started researching different salons that could do the job, I was deterred because of the price. So here I sit with my lackluster hair, unwilling to splurge, but wanting this season’s hottest ombré hair trend.
However, my lusted-after highlights may not be as far away as I thought. Last week I attended an open house event at L’Oreal Professional Products Academy, located at 435 Hudson Street in the West Village, NYC. The Academy tests out the various new L’Oreal USA Professional Product brands such as Redken, Pureology, and Matrix, on hair models, who are the first to experience new salon services and treatments before they are offered to the public. Models receive salon services including color, styling, perms and straightening, to name a few, and it’s all for free.
The L’Oreal Professional Products Academy is currently recruiting hair models, both men and women, for testing of new services and treatments. In order to become a model one must:
- Attend a 15 minute evaluation and allergy test.
- Meet with a licensed cosmetologist to determine which salon services are right for your hair type.
- After completing the above two steps, participants will be scheduled for a free hair color, styling, relaxer, straightening, or treatment appointment.
L’Oreal Professional Products Academy, offers many perks, other than free salon services. Models receive free professional products to use at home and a 75% off pass to use at the L’Oreal Employee Company Store on hair, makeup, nail and skin care products. So what are you waiting for? Visit their Facebook Page or call (917) 606-9563 to get started, and be sure to pass on the news.
I don’t know about you, but we women (and some men) often use tons of electrical appliances to keep our hair looking its best.
Whether it’s a blow dryer or hair iron, we own tons of gadgets with long, tangled cords that can only be used when plugged into an outlet. On top of that, in order to use these tools we require the outlet to be near a mirror. Then, once our styling is over, the tools are returned to the clutter of other products creating a potential fire hazard.
Momtrepreneur and Inventor Marcy McKenna, has invented a product that solves all of the above issues. It’s called the The Style & Go™ Hair Care Valet, and is a mounted cabinet that neatly stores hair care appliances and products. McKenna beat out thousands of contestants in Kelly Ripa’s TLC series, Homemade Millionaire, which follows aspiring female entrepreneurs in their quest to land a lucrative deal with mega-giant retailer, HSN.
The Style & Go™ is a unique product, and there is nothing else like it in the market. In addition to offering a clutter-free way to store appliances, the sleek design comes with a built-in power cord, electrical outlets, and features mirrors on both the exterior and interior cabinet door for multi-side viewing while styling.
I am a huge fan of products that can my aid in making my beauty routine hassle-free, so I think this is an awesome product. After I straighten my hair in the morning, I put my warm iron away and hope that when I return home, my house hasn’t burned down. With the Style & Go™, there is no need to wait for your appliances to cool down. You can set your hair appliances in the cabinet right after you use it, shut the door, and leave.
Style & Go™ is set to make its HSN debut on July 25th, so be sure to tune in on the following days:

Yesterday I attended the press preview event for Redken’s new Semi-Permanent Smooth Lock in-salon service and retail line. This innovative new salon service and at-home regimen will be launching in early July, just in time for the summer when hair is most vulnerable to frizz. Whether hair is straight or curly, the 2-step heat-activated service is able to smooth strands, for a frizz-free result that lasts up to 10 shampoos and cuts styling time almost in half. Smooth Lock is not a straightening system; instead, it temporarily relaxes hair using a combination of heat fuse complex, almond oil and Interlock Protein Network (technology that delivers proteins to repair hair from the inside out). The result is silky smooth, manageable hair that’s easy to style.
This system is perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to spend a laborious amount of time damaging their hair with hot styling tools in an effort to eliminate frizz. I’m excited about this service because I spend hours straightening my naturally curly hair, and as soon as I go outside, my perfectly polished locks channel their inner Diana Ross and I’m back to square one. Since, the heat fuse complex creates a protective barrier against humidity, I won’t have to worry about this problem anymore (I love you Diana, but I can’t rock an afro of curls at work!).
The Semi-Permanent Smooth Look Technique is not just valuable to people like me who want to smooth out their curls; it is also useful for women who wish to have curly or wavy hair. There are currently four different service options offered: The Ultra Straight Technique, The Curl Refining Technique, The Smooth Wave Technique, and an Express Smooth Service. The entire smoothing process takes about 45 minutes, and can be performed very 3 to 6 weeks.
Relaxed tresses can be maintained at home with The Smooth Lock retail line, which features heat-activated formulas, including Heat-Glide leave-in protective smoother, which reduces frizz by 92% and lasts up to 48 hours. The products can be used alone, or in combination with the in-salon service, and range in price from $15-$17.
